The Third Crop <the_third_crop@lists.iatp.org>
With low crop and livestock prices, increasing concerns for the environmental impact of agriculture, and the loss of people and businesses from rural communities, US agriculture needs to redefine itself. The causes and solutions for these problems are complex, but a more diversified agriculture could buffer many of these economic and environmental issues. This bulletin provides farmers and others information on what opportunities are available to diversify agriculture. "Third crop" does not just mean adding crops to a rotation - our definition also includes agri-tourism, wildlife habitat, energy production, and a host of other practices that help diversify farms. This bulletin provides news and resources that can help foster the transition to a more diversified agriculture.
